TRANSLATOR ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

Required competencies (the following competences are aligned with Lilt’s Quality Management System (QMS), as well as ISO 17100: Translation Services Requirements):

  1. Translation competence: The ability to translate content in accordance with translator role description below, including:
    • The ability to address the problems of language content comprehension and language content production.
    • The ability to render the target language content in accordance with customer agreements and other project specifications.
  2. Linguistic and textual competence in the source language and the target language: The ability to understand the source language, fluency in the target language, and general or specialized knowledge of text-type conventions. This linguistic and textual competence includes the ability to apply this knowledge when producing translation or other target language content.
  3. Competence in research, information acquisition, and processing: The ability to efficiently acquire the additional linguistic and specialized knowledge necessary to understand the source language content and to produce target content.
  4. Cultural competence: The ability to make use of information on the behavioral standards, up-to-date terminology, value systems, and locale that characterize both source and target language cultures.
  5. Technical competence: The knowledge, abilities, and skills required to perform the technical tasks in the translation process by employing technical resources, including the tools and IT systems that support the whole translation process.
  6. Domain competence: The ability to understand content produced in the source language and to reproduce it in the target language using the appropriate style and terminology.

  • Familiarizing with the customer information and content provided by the Lilt services team.
  • Timely confirming availability and capacity for customer projects.
  • Performing translation tasks in the Lilt platform.
  • Adhering to supplied Language Assets, Style Guides, Glossaries, Term Bases, Translation Memory, DNT lists, and any other assets or references made available for translator’s use.
  • Adhering to Text Specification Framework (TSF) in full and timely communicating any opportunities for improvement to the Lilt services team.
  • Adhering to the brand guidelines, including style, tone of voice, and register, as outlined in the Master tab of TSF (in the absence of TSF, in line with any other approved material supplied).
  • Using the commenting feature of Lilt Translate to communicate rationales and translation approach for reviewer or services team to check.
  • Communicating with the services team, raising queries, escalating issues, and conveying potential impacts on the delivery in a timely manner.
  • Proofreading translated segments for grammar, spelling, and punctuation accuracy, ensuring translations are error free prior to confirming it in Lilt platform.
  • Performing full Quality Assurance (QA) checks to ensure the deliverable is linguistically accurate.
  • Ensuring placeholders and tags are placed in the correct place of the segment to reflect the original format of the source.
  • Confirming the final version of the segments in Lilt platform and ensuring the content is fit-for-purpose.
  • Accepting responsibility for the quality of the deliverable to the customer.
  • Delivering the translation on time.
  • Evaluating and responding to linguistic quality issues, general feedback, and questions from the Lilt services team.
  • Taking accountability for the received feedback and working with the services team to rectify quality non-conformances and implement corrective actions.

The following SLA terms and definitions are based on Lilt’s QMS, and adopted the translation service requirements of ISO 17100:

  • Product use: The translator:
    • is responsible for human quality output
    • shall perform translation tasks in Lilt, using the AI and NMT suggestions
  • Deadlines, turnaround and schedule:
    The translator commits to >98% delivery on time, based on pre-agreed delivery schedule. Extension requests to not exceed 5% of project count on a weekly basis.
  • Error rates:
    The translator commits to <5% translator error rate based on Lilt Quality Framework.
  • Productivity and output:
    Productivity Range as communicated by Services Team.
  • Service Level Commitment:
    The translator shall translate in accordance with the purpose of the translation project, including the linguistic conventions of the target language and relevant project specifications. Throughout this process, the translator shall provide a service conforming to this International Standard with regards to the following:
    • Compliance with specific domain terminology, client terminology, and any other reference material provided to ensure terminological consistency during translation.
    • Semantic accuracy of the target language content.
    • Appropriate syntax, spelling, punctuation, diacritical marks, and other orthographical conventions of the target language.
    • Lexical cohesion and phraseology.
    • Compliance with any proprietary style guide and customer style guide (including domain, language register, and language variants).
    • Locale and any applicable standards.
    • Formatting.
    • Target audience and purpose of the target language content.

The translator shall raise any uncertainty as a query with the services team.

The translator self-revises the target content (in-context where available):

  • for possible semantic, grammatical, and spelling issues
  • for omissions and other errors
  • to ensuring compliance with any relevant translation project specification

The translator shall make any corrections necessary prior to delivery.
